New contribution of Plan3D in scientific article

Mar 14, 2025

Clinical simulation training has taken a new leap forward thanks to the use of 3D printing models, and a recent study confirms this. The publication, carried out by researchers from the University of Valparaiso, Chile, analyzes the advantages of a 3D simulator versus the traditional pig laryngotracheal apparatus model for surgical cricothyroidotomy, a critical technique in emergency situations. This study has been published in the Colombian Journal of Anesthesiology.

Study Context

Emergency front-of-neck airway access, known as eFONA, is the last resort in “can’t intubate, can’t oxygenate”(CICO) situations. This critical scenario, although rare, can have catastrophic clinical consequences, making constant simulation training essential.

In order to compare and analyze a 3D printing model with the traditionally used pig laryngotracheal apparatus, the researchers conducted an experimental study with residents of Anesthesiology and Resuscitation, as well as Otolaryngology.

Key Results

The study evaluated the anatomical fidelity and effectiveness of both models, revealing important findings:

  1. Palpation of anatomical structures: The 3D model obtained better evaluations in most of the anatomical repairs, except for the thyroid cartilage, where both models were similar.

  2. Technical accuracy: The 3D printing model excelled in visualization, palpation and manipulation, key aspects for effective training.

  3. Operational advantages: Unlike the pig model, the 3D simulator offers advantages in terms of availability, standardization and the possibility of repeated training without relying on biological resources.

Conclusion

The 3D simulation model proved to be a superior tool in many aspects, which reinforces its usefulness in ongoing clinical training. This type of simulator not only improves the preparedness of professionals, but also contributes to reducing the risks associated with emergency situations such as CICO.

At PLAN3D, we are proud that our simulators are helping to transform medical education by providing innovative, high-fidelity solutions to healthcare challenges.
